Before Sleep

Lying Down to Sleep

Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 6320; Sahih Muslim 2714

Transliteration

Bismika rabbi wada'tu janbi, wa bika arfa'uh, fa in amsakta nafsi farhamha, wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfazu bihi 'ibadakas-salihin.

Translation

In Your name, my Lord, I lie down, and in Your name I rise. If You take my soul, have mercy on it; and if You return it, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.

What this dua means

You hand your soul to Allah as you sleep — asking for mercy if you don't wake, and protection if you do.

When to read it

When you lie down in bed at night.

Virtue

The Prophet ﷺ taught this as the nightly handover of the soul to its Lord. (Bukhari 6320)
