Forgiveness

The Believers' Plea

Source: Qur'an 3:16

رَبَّنَا إِنَّنَا آمَنَّا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Transliteration

Rabbanā innanā āmannā, faghfir lanā dhunūbanā wa qinā 'adhāb an-nār.

Translation

Our Lord, indeed we have believed, so forgive us our sins and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

What this dua means

You come to Allah with the one thing you have — your faith — and ask Him to trade it for forgiveness and safety from the Fire.

When to read it

In sujood, after prayer, in the last third of the night — whenever you seek forgiveness.

Virtue

Allah describes the people who say this as the patient, the truthful, the obedient — and promises them forgiveness and gardens (Qur'an 3:15–17).
