Visiting the Graveyard

Source: Sahih Muslim 975

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَلَاحِقُونَ، أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ لَنَا وَلَكُمُ الْعَافِيَةَ

Transliteration

Assalamu 'alaykum ahlad-diyar minal-mu'minina wal-muslimin, wa inna in sha Allahu lalahiqun, as'alullaha lana wa lakumul-'afiyah

Translation

Peace be upon you, people of these dwellings, from among the believers and the Muslims. We will, God willing, join you. I ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.

What this dua means

It greets the dead with peace and asks Allah for well-being for the living and the dead.

When to read it

Say it when you enter a graveyard.

Its virtue

The Prophet taught this to his companions, and it reminds the heart of the Hereafter.
